WINERY: Moccagatta
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Piemonte
APPELLATION: Barbaresco D.O.C.G
GRAPE: 100% Nebbiolo
WINEMAKER NOTES: The Bric Balin vineyard is located in the winery’s amphitheater, which gives the company its name, and on the western side of the ridge that descends towards the center of the municipality of Barbaresco. The soil is made up of laminated Sant’Agata fossil marl that’s richer in clay. Exposure to cool air, combined with the clay, produces wine with good structure and character. Harvesting is done manually. The bunches are placed in 20 kg crates to preserve their quality.
TASTING NOTES: Its color is a beautiful, intense garnet red, and its aroma presents a fruity and complex scent. It has a fresh, full-bodied flavor with powerful tannins.
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: It’s perfect for pairing with dishes made with stewed or grilled red meats, cured meats, game, and medium-aged cheeses.
ABOUT THE WINERY: The vineyards of Moccagatta, located in the town of Barbaresco, have been in the Minuto family since the second half of 1800, when it came under the ownership of proprietor and patriarch Giovanni Minuto. Giovanni’s son, Luigi, began turning his family’s harvest into wine in 1913 before passing down his life’s work to his sons, Lorenzo and Mario, in the early 50’s. A family affair to this very day, Moccagatta continues to focus on both the terroir of their homeland and the finesse that Barbaresco demands. The vineyards are all farmed organically and the wines, while being aged in a stunningly updated winery, speak of a place and of a people with a long history of tending this very land.
