The Grape:
Verdeca is a white Italian wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Colli Piacentini region of Emilia- Romagna in central Italy and Apulia in southern Italy where ampelographers believe that the grape may have originated. While used mostly as blending variety, Verdeca on its own can produce mineral wines that tend to have a "flinty" note. The grape ripens very late and even in the very warm regions of southern Italy tends to have fairly high acidity and green, vegetal notes.
Winemaking:
The grapes are hand-picked and collected in small cases. They then undergo maceration on the skins at cold temperature, which helps to extract the maximum scent from the skins. Alcoholic fermentation follows in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature not over 16°C. Once the fermentation has finished, the wine is kept at a cold temperature of 10°, thus preventing the malolactic fermentation to take place.
Tasting notes:
Brilliant green-gold color, intense saline notes followed by ripe yellow fruit, pineapple, but also helichrysum and chamomile. On the palate it is surprisingly fresh, enveloping and with a long fruity finish. Every sip is an experience in itself, revealing new sensations.
