WINERY: Azienda Agricola Vadiaperti
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Campania
APPELLATION: Coda di Volpe DOC
GRAPE: 100% Coda di Volpe

WINEMAKER NOTES: A straight-up delicious take on one of Campania’s lesser-celebrated whites from the hands of one of the region’s more-celebrated masters of the varietal with plenty of the requisite freshness and aromatic lift you’d expect from a young, unoaked white, albeit with a level of depth and structure you might not have expected. Coda di Volpe in Italian means ‘tail of the fox,’ as grape bunches resemble the animal’s thick, bushy tail.

TASTING NOTES: An enticing nose offers wet stone and spice nuance to the yellow citrus-dominated palate. Earth notes add complexity to a long, lemony, herbal finish that is drawn out even further with a honeyed, almost resinous element. Nudging a little beyond medium in its weight, its lushness is checked by a precise freshness and a tactile mineral grip that seems to leave your mouth watering endlessly.

PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:  Fresh oysters or other shellfish; ricotta-filled ravioli.

ABOUT THE WINERY: Since the end of the nineteenth century, the Troisi family has championed the wines of Irpina, a historic vine-growing area in northern Campania.  Raffaele Troisi’s father Antonio was one of the first growers to bottle a single-variety Fiano wine, while Raffaele himself was the first to bottle a single-variety Coda di Volpe. Vadiaperti’s highaltitude vineyards and pure volcanic soils combine for southern Italian white wines of impeccable finesse, freshness and character.
