WINERY: Elena Fucci
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Basilicata
APPELLATION: Aglianico del Vulture DOP
GRAPE: 100% Aglianico
WINEMAKER NOTES: In 2016, Elena Fucci, responsible for saving her family’s high altitude, volcanic soil vineyards and solidifying the appellation with her singular Titolo cru, began another passion project, SCEG (translation pomegranate), to help out friends of her 94-year-old grandfather Generoso. To preserve their vines and tradition, she makes this special wine from his friends’ vines, four parcels near her family’s vineyards, and vines ageing 70+ years. SGEC (pronounced Sheg) is organically farmed Aglianico, spending one year in 500L tonneaux and 6 months in bottle before release.
TASTING NOTES: Wild herbs, wild black fruit flood this structural palate, infiltrated with fragrant violets and smoky quartz, lit with mountainous acidity, and framed with firm, sticky tannins which draw this to a saline end. A beauty aglianico, primed for enjoyment now, though able to hold in your cellar over the next couple of years easy.
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Pair with savory, meaty dishes (like sausages), hearty vegetable dishes like earthy lentils, and moderately aged sheep cheeses like Pecorino.
ABOUT THE WINERY: Elena Fucci grew up in the middle of the vineyards that her grandfather Generoso began farming in the 1960’s, selling the fruit to the local cooperative. Rather than sell off the family properties in 2000, Elena Fucci took on the challenge of stewarding the oldest vineyards on Monte Vulture, forever changing the future of the Aglianico del Vulture DOC.
