No grape has known such a dramatic upgrade in its fortunes and image in the last 20 years than Barbera in Piemonte, north-west Italy. Considered by many to be the quintessential ‘wine of the people,’ it’s meant to be enjoyed young and it is a terrific value. Generally an easy drinking wine, in the hands of producers like Borgogno, Barbera shows a more serious and structured side while maintaining its classic juicy freshness.
Following a manual harvest of Barbera grapes in our vineyards in Madonna di Como (Alba), during this process we make a careful selection, in the cellar the grapes are destemmed and pressed. This is followed by a spontaneous fermentation in large concrete tanks, at a temperature between 22°C and 28°c for about 12 days. This is followed by a soft pressing and ageing into large oak barrels for 10 months. Then 4 months of aging in bottle.
Intense ruby red color in the glass with a persistent vinous fragrance. Fresh red fruits and spicy hints on the nose. Dry and with a pleasantly bitter edge encircling plum and cherry fruit and floral notes rounded by a refreshing acidity.
