The Grape:
Nebbiolo is the superstar grape variety behind the top-quality red wines in Italy’s northwestern Piedmont, and in particular, the heady, powerful reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are often distinctively perfumed with an aroma described as "tar and roses". Powerful, intense Barolo is the most famous and prestigious Nebbiolo-based wine, but it is increasingly rivaled by the slightly more elegant and perfumed wines from Barbaresco to the northeast.
Winemaking:
Pietro, and his sons Marco and Ivan, purely express these great terroirs through very old-school methods, with one personal twist. The month-long native yeast fermentation takes place in stainless steel tank and conical wooden vats, without temperature control and using the ultra-traditional ‘cappello sommerso’ for gentle extraction. The twist is in using Austrian oak, rather than the usual Slovenian, for the family’s classic large barrels (botti). Untoasted and neutral, Pietro calls them “the best-quality barrels I have ever seen.”
Tasting Notes:
Bright, vibrant and already appealing, shows the ripeness of the vintage yet retains a sense of poise. Certainly the fruit is more open and inviting than would be the case in a cooler, longer vintage, but given an entry level Barbaresco is to be consumed earlier, this example really finds its mark with layered, juicy deep red fruits with touches of mint and spice. A pure, stylish Barbaresco that is sure to prove all too tempting in its youth.
