WINERY: Marchesi Incisa della Roccheta
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Piemonte
APPELLATION: Grignolino d’Asti DOC
GRAPE: 100% Grignolino
WINEMAKER NOTES: Grignolino is a grape varietal indigenous to Monferrato, and one of the oldest from the region. The wine produced with these grapes has a light ruby -red color. Grignolino, that was at risk of disappearing from the Piemontese viticulture, is now experiencing an important rediscovery by fans of native, autochthonous vines.
TASTING NOTES: On the nose it shows delicate wild strawberry- and spice notes, and on the palate it reveals an important tannic structure, as pleasant as it is unexpected. Light-bodied, structured with fine tannins, persistent with an elegant finish.
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: despite the light color, but thanks to its tannic structure, Grignolino is a very good match for a wide range of dishes: from pasta dishes with tomato sauces, pizzas, light cheeses and charcuteries to grilled meats and fish, vegetarian dishes, sushi and Asian cuisine in general. It can be served chilled and enjoyed as an ideal summer wine.
ABOUT THE WINERY: The history of the Monferrato area and that of Marchesi Incisa della Rochetta, a family whose origins date back to before the eleventh century, are very closely linked. For centuries, their family has owned vineyards and produced its own wine, an activity most likely started by the Benedictine monks, who were given the right, by the family, to plant vines in the hills of their property in Rocchetta Tanaro.
The legendary Sassicaia was created by another member of the family, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a passionate winemaker and a true visionary.
