The Domaine du Docteur Rodgers Vineyard (DDR) is our flagship vineyard that surrounds our house in Woodside, in California’s “San Francisco Bay” wine-growing region. In blind tastings of our vintages, the DDR wines, with their rich flavors, and signature bay-leaf bouquet, are always obvious to identify. They are 20-year wines, as our DDR 1996 still shows. As with all of our vineyards, the wines have enhanced concentration due to the exclusive use of certified French Pinot Noir clones that are close planted with 4,149 vines per acre, over twice the density of other premium Pinot Noir vineyards. Today, half of the vineyard has been replanted in a super-dense “Goblet” format with our preferred Dijon 828 Pinot Noir clone at a record density of 6,132 vines per acre.
Tasting notes: We call Domaine du Docteur Rodgers (DDR) our “rich, luscious Pinot Noir with a unique bouquet.” The following tasting note is from the first sommelier to hold both the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier titles, Ronn Wiegand: “A classic version of the DDR wine (⁕⁕⁕⁕⁕) ‒ and the best yet. It is a full bodied, supple, rich but well balanced Pinot Noir with firm structure, and a very long, persistent finish, tasting of cherry, menthol, eucalyptus, sage, chocolate mint, cedar, and tobacco. It is likely to be at its best between 2021 and 2025.”
